Background

Nelson/Tasman Bays coastal community thrives on the bounty of its land and seas, a place of abundance, immersed in traditions dating back centuries. We have a rich maritime history with fishing, shipping, boatbuilding, yachting, natural history, Māori, and early Pākehā settlements.

Join us in sharing this rich heritage with our community and raising awareness of our blue economy.

The moana has the power to bring coastal communities together to learn, remember their heritage, heal, and be sustained. Whakatū (Nelson) is the maritime gateway and a vital hub for economic activity and a key stakeholder in our region’s continued growth and prosperity.

The Gleam Team Trust promotes connection to the moana and all its taonga, bringing a sense of wellbeing through an outdoor experience in the local waters of Nelson Haven and Tasman Bay.

Our goal is to:

  • Connect the community with our local maritime industries
  • Showcase the region’s maritime past and future through storytelling
  • Enable maritime entities to showcase their businesses
  • Educate and motivate environmental sustainability
  • Ensure inclusion and provide our communities a connection to the moana

Vessel

The Gleam was owned by a well-known Nelson local boat builder, Jack Guard (QSM). It is one of the region’s oldest fishing vessels and is owned by New Zealand’s oldest fishing family. She is now retired and ready to give back to the moana and the community.

Experience

We will be taking small groups of up to 12 passengers for approximately 1-2 hours on Port tours to promote the local blue economy (some of these trips will be free of charge), and on hire for innovation or training opportunities.
