The effects of sleep apnea!
Sleep apnea has been identified as impacting over 40% of fishers in some nations. This means they are fatigued before they even start work!
Take a look at the video link below and see how sleep apnea impacts truck drivers!
Support for Tirzah
Tirzah's mum and dad have been serving as full time volunteers with the charity, Crossroads Foundation, in Hong Kong for the past 5 years. Financially, therefore, Tirzah's medical treatment is a very large burden on a family that has been so focussed on helping others.
Now it's our turn to help them!
Any donations will go toward their housing costs, treatment, hospital bills etc. and would be gratefully received as times are hard for them at the moment.

Launch of the 2017 Health and Safety Attitudes and Behaviors survey
Guard Safety were pleased to have the opportunity to attend the release of the Health and Safety Attitudes and Behaviors survey for 2017!
The survey was a joint initiative between WorkSafe NZ and Maritime NZ.
Nicole Rosie, WorkSafe NZ CEO, and Keith Manch, Director of MNZ, both gave excellent summaries of the survey findings.
It is clear we have made progress but progress slips if we don’t keep the focus on NZ health and Safety.
Below is the URL where you can access the full reports for WorkSafe’s four higher-risk sectors, the cross-sector report and the special report on worker engagement, participation and representation.
Maritime New Zealand’s report on attitudes and behaviours in the commercial fishing sector can be accessed through the following link as well.
Congratulations to Karyn Byrom for being accepted onto the HASANZ register for health and safety professionals!
Just another verification that Guard Safety can provide our clients with professional, compliant yet practical health and safety services.
HASANZ is the umbrella organisation for the workplace health and safety disciplines and was established in September 2014 to raise professional standards to provide healthier and safer workplaces.
It has launched New Zealand’s first online register of workplace health and safety professionals and will provide businesses with better access to quality health and safety advice.
Guard Safety presenting at IFISH5 in Canada!
Darren Guard from Guard Safety and Marion Edwin from Optimise Ltd. were proud to attend and present at the fifth International Fishing Industry Safety and Health conference in Newfoundland (Canada).
IFISH5 was held in St John's, a city with more than 500 years of commercial fishing history.
Darren Guard presented on the New Zealand fishing industry safety and health legislation and outlined MOSS, our new vessel safety management system.
Darren and Marion encourage New Zealand seafood companies, health and safety professionals, and Maritime NZ representatives to ensure that they attend IFISH6, which is suggested for 2021.
They were very grateful to Seafood NZ for part-funding the trip!
Marion Edwin is an ergonomist who has worked to address musculoskeletal injury risks for fishers on New Zealand's larger vessels.

Guard Safety was privileged to attend and speak at the annual Nelson Blessing of the Fleet for 2018!
And we are very proud to do so!
Great vessel and community turn out this year.
A great time to remember those who lost their lives to provide for their families and you.
Fair winds and calm seas to the Maritime community!!!
